How Should Newborn Baby Skincare Be Taken Care Of?
A newborn’s arrival brings a wave of joy and responsibility. As parents start organizing essential items, they also grapple with the immense task of providing the best possible care for their precious baby. This period is crucial for both the baby’s overall well-being and the tender care of their delicate skin.
A baby’s delicate skin is much more sensitive compared to adults. During pregnancy, a layer called Vernix Caseosa—a white, oily substance—forms on the baby’s skin. This layer has antimicrobial properties that protect the skin from various bacterial infections. Vernix contains a unique component called Squalene, which acts as a natural moisturizer for the skin. Therefore, the skincare products suitable for adults are not appropriate for babies. The active ingredients and fragrances used in adult skincare products can damage the baby’s Vernix layer, leading to issues like dryness, rashes, and redness.
To prevent these initial skin problems, parents need to pay close attention to certain aspects of their baby’s care.
- Proper Bathing for Babies
In many cultures, including ours, there is a traditional belief that a baby should be bathed immediately after birth. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a newborn should not be bathed until at least 24 hours after birth. This delay allows the Vernix layer, a natural protective coating on the baby’s skin, to remain intact. Immediate bathing can strip this layer, leaving the skin dry and tight. Bathing 2-3 times a week is sufficient for newborns.
But how can you keep your baby clean on non-bath days? On these days, you can gently clean your baby using a process called “topping and tailing.” Here’s how to do it:
- Steps for Topping and Tailing
- Take a bowl of warm water (not hot). Do not mix shampoo or body wash into the water. Test the water’s temperature with your elbow to ensure it’s suitable for the baby.
- Use a cotton ball or a soft muslin cloth soaked in warm water. Gently wring out the cloth and wipe the baby’s face, nose, and ears. Use a separate cloth to clean around the eyes, especially to remove any buildup at the corners.
- Use another cloth to gently clean the neck, arms, and legs, focusing on the folds and creases. If these areas are not cleaned properly, they can become prone to infections.
- Use a separate cloth to gently clean the baby’s front and back genital areas. Ensure proper hygiene.
- Always change the water for cleaning the entire body. Also, use separate cloths for different body parts to avoid the risk of skin infections.
- After cleaning, use a soft, dry towel to pat the baby’s skin dry immediately.
- You can wash the baby’s head separately if needed.
- Using Moisturizers Based on Skin Needs
Many parents believe that newborns need frequent application of oils or lotions. However, excessive use can damage the natural moisturizer present in their skin, making it overly dry and prone to irritation. Overuse can also cause peeling and even rashes. Apply lotion or oil only after cleaning the baby or after a bath. Avoid rubbing the skin too much during application to prevent irritation. Choose gentle, hypoallergenic moisturizers suited for babies. In that case, using fragrance-free and paraben-free products would be best for children’s skin care.
- Diaper/Nappy Changing Routine
The use of diapers for babies is becoming increasingly popular in our country due to their high absorbency. Nowadays, a wide variety of diapers are available in the market. However, many parents still prefer soft cloth nappies for their babies. Regardless of the choice, it is crucial to ensure that neither diapers nor nappies are kept on for extended periods. Prolonged use can lead to discomfort, cold, fever, or cough in babies. Regularly change the diaper or nappy to keep the baby clean and dry. During each change, gently clean the anal area and surrounding folds with a soft cloth or baby wipes. Avoid using soap directly on these sensitive areas. If diaper rash occurs, apply a diaper rash cream or petroleum jelly to soothe the skin. These products help keep the skin soft and prevent redness or irritation.
- Oil Massage for Babies
Oil massage is considered very beneficial for babies. After birth, due to changes in body temperature or during illness, babies often tend to clench their hands and feet. Massaging with coconut oil, olive oil, or a mild baby massage oil before bathing can help. Regular massages helps to improve blood circulation in and promote better sleep at night. This practice not only enhances physical well-being but also strengthens the bond between parents and the baby.
- Using Soft Cotton Clothing
When choosing clothes for newborns and very young babies, parents should always prioritize comfort. Tight or overly designed garments should be avoided, as they can irritate the skin and cause issues like rashes or allergies. It is best to wash the baby’s clothes in lukewarm water and disinfect them to ensure maximum hygiene.
- Short Exposure to Gentle Sunlight
A few minutes of gentle sunlight exposure daily can be highly beneficial for babies. Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D, which helps strengthen bones and aids in their development. It can also provide relief from minor body aches. However, avoid keeping the baby in harsh sunlight; morning sunlight is ideal for this purpose.
Parents always strive to give the best care to their children. While some traditional practices for baby care have been followed for generations, many of them have been adapted to align with modern understanding. Following these updated guidelines can help maintain a baby’s health and protect them from common infections. Let your little one thrive under your loving care!
