Curly Hair Care

Just like our skin, everyone’s hair type is different. Some people have straight hair, while others have curly or wavy hair. The hair care routine for these two types is quite different. Straight hair is usually easier to manage, whereas curly hair requires more time and attention. That’s why curly hair needs extra care.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association has provided some useful tips for curly hair. Let’s take a look!

Avoid Frequent Shampooing

Washing curly hair too often can make it dry and difficult to manage. If your hair is very curly, shampooing 2-3 times a week is sufficient. For long hair, divide it into sections while shampooing for better coverage. While shampoo should be applied to the scalp, conditioner should only be applied to the hair, not the scalp, to avoid irritation and excess oil buildup, which can lead to hair fall.

Use a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo. Look for natural ingredients like argan oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, or coconut oil in your shampoo. For conditioning, opt for products that contain proteins and emollients to keep curls soft and hydrated. Leave-in conditioners work well for maintaining softness in curly hair.

Keep Hair Moisturized

Curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types. Apply a thick layer of conditioner to keep it hydrated. Sometimes, curly hair gets tangled before shampooing. To make shampooing and conditioning easier, gently detangle your hair beforehand. You can also apply conditioner before shampooing for extra moisture.

Take Care of Your Scalp

A clean scalp is essential for healthy hair. Shampooing 1-2 times a week helps prevent oil buildup and dirt accumulation, which can cause hair fall. If you have dandruff, avoid applying anti-dandruff shampoo all over your hair, as it can make your hair dry. Instead, apply it only to your scalp, leave it for 2-10 minutes, and rinse well. Then, use a moisturizing shampoo for the rest of your hair. If dandruff is severe, consult a doctor for a suitable anti-dandruff shampoo.

Detangle Gently

Curly hair is prone to tangling. Use a wide-tooth wooden comb to gently detangle your hair. If your hair is difficult to manage, slightly dampen it and apply leave-in conditioner or serum to the ends before detangling. This will make the process smoother.

Protect from Sun Damage

UV rays can dry out curly hair easily. Whenever you go out, cover your hair with a hat, scarf, or umbrella to protect it from the sun.

Tie Your Hair Before Sleeping

Leaving your hair loose while sleeping can cause friction with the pillowcase, leading to dryness and hair fall. To prevent this, loosely braid your hair before going to bed.

Hair texture depends on our hormones and DNA, which is why everyone’s hair type is different. Taking proper care and following these simple tips will keep your curly hair soft, smooth, and healthy all year round. Take care of your beautiful curls!
