Hair Care For Kids
Parents never stop worrying about the care of their little ones at home. From the moment a child is born, they do everything in their power to ensure their baby is healthy and happy. A child’s mental and physical well-being depends on proper care — including food, sleep, bathing, and more. Hair care is no exception.
Many people use the same hair care products on children that are meant for adults. However, this is not advisable. A child’s skin and hair remain quite delicate from birth up to around 5–6 years of age. Products formulated for adults can be too harsh for a child’s soft skin and hair, potentially causing dryness or irritation.
The same advice applies to the use of shampoo, conditioner, and oil on a child’s hair.
Regular Hair Cleaning
Some believe that since children don’t go outside much, frequent shampooing isn’t necessary. However, it’s important to understand that right after birth, a baby’s skin begins to adjust to the external environment — often resulting in peeling of the outer skin layer. At the same time, the scalp starts producing sebum to retain moisture. Therefore, even if not daily, a baby’s hair should be cleaned at least once or twice a week with a gentle baby shampoo. When choosing a shampoo, make sure it is silicone and paraben-free, as these are safest for your child’s scalp and hair. Regular cleaning is key.
Use of Hair Oil
A baby’s scalp can dry out easily. To keep it moisturized, gently massage baby oil or olive oil into the scalp regularly. This improves blood circulation and strengthens the hair roots, helping healthy hair growth.
Trimming Hair
Children’s hair tends to grow faster than adults’. If a baby has a lot of hair, it may sometimes become uncomfortable for them. Additionally, some children develop scalp allergies. For overall comfort and hygiene, it’s a good idea to trim their hair regularly.
Combing Hair is Essential
Regularly combing a child’s hair helps improve scalp blood circulation and can reduce the chances of developing cradle cap (a condition where thick dandruff-like patches form on the scalp). It also supports healthy hair growth. Always use a soft-bristled brush when combing your baby’s hair.
Caring for a baby involves attention to many details — and hair care is one of them. So, always keep these points in mind before applying any products to your child’s hair.
