Skincare For Summer
As the cycle of seasons turns, summer is approaching once again. Due to unstable climate conditions and environmental factors, the intensity of summer heat is increasing day by day. Just last year, we experienced one of the most extreme heatwaves in recent memory in our country. From a health perspective, our skin is the most affected by such conditions. The scorching heat of the sun and excessive warmth lead to issues like sunburn, tanning, acne, and redness. Moreover, the humidity in the air causes the skin to produce more oil or sebum than usual. The combination of heatwaves and high moisture levels in the air makes the summer heat unbearable.
Wash Your Face with Soap or Facewash
Excessive heat leads to increased sebum production and sweating, which can clog pores and result in issues like acne or pimples. Washing your face with soap or a good facewash helps remove excess oil and dirt from the skin. Acne and other skin problems are not limited to oily skin; improper cleansing can lead to issues on any skin type. Therefore, it is essential to choose a pH-balanced facewash that suits your skin type.
Use Sunscreen
We all know nowadays how important it is to use sunscreen before going out in the hot sun. Spending too much time outdoors without sunscreen exposes the skin to high levels of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which can penetrate deep into the skin, causing sunburn and suntan. Prolonged exposure to the sun without sunscreen increases the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, it is essential to apply sunscreen according to your skin type at least 15-20 minutes before going out. For oily skin, it’s best to use a sunscreen with a matte finish. Since the humidity is quite high outdoors, applying face powder before going out can reduce the chances of sweating. For exposed areas like hands and feet, use a body lotion with a good SPF. If possible, reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. In this case, a sunscreen stick can be a convenient and travel-friendly option.
Double Cleansing and Exfoliation
Due to the heat, dirt, excess oil, and sweat accumulate on the skin throughout the day. Therefore, not only facial cleansing but also double cleansing is becoming increasingly important for skincare. Since sunscreen is applied before going out, it needs to be cleaned with a cleansing toner, oil, or micellar water after being left on the skin for a long time. To remove dead skin cells, the skin should be exfoliated with a mild scrub 1-2 times a week.
Use of Antioxidants
Using products with antioxidants on your skin is beneficial. Antioxidants boost collagen in the skin and protect it from free radical damage. Try adding Vitamin C products to your daily skincare routine.
Use of Moisturizer
Using a moisturizer during this time often feels uncomfortable. This is usually because the moisturizer being used does not match the skin type. For oily skin, a watery gel-type moisturizer works best. Soothing gels are particularly effective in reducing skin irritation. Any type of gel or face mist can provide a cooling effect if stored in the refrigerator before use, which helps alleviate skin irritation. Therefore, it is essential to maintain a basic skincare routine consistently.
Use an SPF Lip Balm
We often remember to apply sunscreen to our facial skin, but we completely forget to apply lip balm or gel to our lips. Not using lip balm or gel can cause lips to become dark and dry due to excessive sun exposure. Therefore, it is important to use an SPF lip balm or lip gel before going out.
Drink Plenty of Water
Excessive heat, sweat, and humidity can lead to dehydration. This causes the skin to lose its natural moisture, making it dry and rough. To keep your skin healthy, drink plenty of water during this time. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every day.
Keep Yourself in the Shade
The sun is at its strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM, with high UV rays. So, when you go out during the day, don’t forget to wear a hat, scarf, or umbrella. Wearing loose cotton clothes in light colors and with full sleeves can make you feel more comfortable.
Taking good care of the skin during the intense heat can be quite challenging. However, if proper care is not taken, the damage to the skin can last for a long time. And during the hot season, almost all skin types experience some kind of problem compared to other times. Therefore, if you take care of your skin in a few simple ways during this time, your skin will remain healthy and vibrant.
