What is a Patch Test? Why is it Necessary?

We use various products on our skin as part of our skincare routine. Often, these products are chosen based on our skin’s specific needs. However, many of us tend to use different skincare products to address temporary skin issues without consulting a dermatologist. Using skincare products without proper understanding can often lead to skin irritation, redness, or acne. It can even damage the skin.

It’s a misconception that all products from renowned skincare brands will suit every skin type. The active ingredients used in the formulation might not work for all skin types. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the specific brand is bad.

We can’t predict how our skin will react to specific ingredients. Our skin type changes over time, so its needs also change. Therefore, we should use products that effectively cater to our skin’s current needs without causing any side effects. It’s always best to do a patch test before using any new product.

What is a patch test? A patch test is basically checking if a new skincare product is suitable for your skin. Even if we use active ingredients based on our skin type and needs, when the same ingredient is in a different formulation, it might take some time for our skin to adjust or it might react negatively. Also, people who are on skin medication or taking certain drugs should be extra cautious about their skin. Therefore, it’s advisable to do a patch test before using any new product on your skin.

How to do a patch test? Clean the area where you plan to do the patch test. Apply a small amount of the product to your earlobe, neck, or wrist and leave it for 30 minutes to 24 hours. If you experience any itching or burning, wash the area immediately with soap and cold water. Observe your skin for any reactions like redness, burning, allergy, or acne.

There are many skincare products available in the market. However, not all products will suit everyone’s skin. This doesn’t mean that the brand is bad. How a product works on your skin largely depends on the patch test. To protect your skin from any negative side effects, always do a patch test.
