What is the Difference Between Serum and Essence?

When it comes to skincare, we need to use different products based on our skin’s needs or concerns. Not long ago, our basic skincare routine mostly consisted of just cleansing and moisturizing. However, with time, we have come to understand the importance of sunscreen. To improve our skincare routine, we continuously try to find what works best for our skin. As a result, the use of serums and essences has become increasingly popular.

But a common question arises—both serums and essences contain active ingredients. So, which one should we use? Can they be used together? In today’s blog, we will answer these questions.

What is a Serum?

A serum is a type of skincare product formulated in a liquid or gel consistency. It contains active ingredients like Niacinamide, Salicylic acid, or Hyaluronic Acid in specific concentrations, targeting particular skin concerns. These concentrations are carefully chosen to help the skin adapt to the product. Since serums have smaller molecules, they penetrate deep into the skin, working efficiently to reduce pigmentation, dark spots, visible wrinkles, fine lines, and enlarged pores. Serums are lightweight and provide a non-greasy finish on the skin.

How and When to Use a Serum?

  1. First, cleanse your face thoroughly using a suitable face wash or cleanser.
  2. Take 3-4 drops of serum with a dropper or pump and gently apply it to your face and neck using a dabbing motion.
  3. Always do a patch test before applying the serum to ensure it suits your skin.

Serum is usually applied to the skin after toner. However, when starting out, it is best to use a low-concentration serum to allow the skin to adjust. Serum can be applied both during the day and at night, but it is more effective when used at night. Why? Because while we sleep, our skin undergoes a repair and regeneration process. Applying serum during this time allows it to work more effectively, making the skin healthier and more radiant.

What is Essence?

Essence is a water-based skincare product formulated with potent active ingredients that help the skin absorb moisture effectively. It improves skin texture and enhances the absorption of subsequent skincare products, leading to better overall results. Essence helps make the skin soft and moisturized.

How to Use Essence?

  1. The application of essence depends on its formulation.
  2. Wash your face with a gentle face wash and apply toner first.
  3. Using a dropper or pump, take 3-4 drops of essence and gently dab it onto your face and neck. Always perform a patch test before using.

Since essence has a lighter concentration than serum, it provides a non-sticky finish, making it ideal for daytime use.

Can Serum and Essence Be Used Together?

Yes, both serum and essence can be used together in both morning and night routines. After cleansing and toning, apply essence first, followed by serum. However, if using an exfoliating serum, apply the serum first and then the essence to minimize skin irritation.

As our skin’s needs evolve over time, we should adjust our skincare routine accordingly. Essence and serum are part of an advanced skincare regimen, which is most beneficial after the age of 20. This is when these products have the most noticeable impact. However, choosing the right products based on your skin type is essential for achieving the best results.
